Product Description
Bos primigenius - Original oil painting by paleo-artist Josef Moravec.
BOS taurus primigenius (aurochs)
This "ancient ox" evolved in India some 2 million years ago, migrated
and was widespread in Europe, southern Asia, and northern Africa. First
domesticated some 6,500 years ago (Turkey), but it is thought by some
authorities, that it were domesticated as early as 10,000 years ago. Bos
primigenius survived the longest in Poland, it is believed that the last
specimen died at the beginning of the 17th century.
Early cattle were raised for meat, milk and for providing labor. This
beast is the ancestor to most of our modern cattle. We can find breeds
today, that resemble their wild ancestor: Spanish fighting
oxen, Scottish and English cattle, etc.
Aurochs had very large and strong bull with massive bones and
thick, long, curved horns. There have been found some excellent prehistoric
paintings of aurochs in the caves in Europe. There also exist a copy of a
lithograph from the early 1600's with the picture of a living aurochs.
